Start with Vitamin D

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

The January 16th Rochester-Rochester Hills Patch did a feature on Megan Wilson an experienced esthetician who offered secrets to great winter skin even when it is suffereing from the lack of Vitamin D.

“Get outside!” is the first tip Wilson offered.  “In Michigan fair-skinned people should get five to eight minutes of sun exposure without SPF.  People with darker complexions can get 10 to 15 minutes of exposure.”

Recommended exposures are two to three times per week.  Vitamin D helps everything in our bodies including our skin.

Beat the Winter Blahs

Snowshoeing at The Homestead

Advice from Sarah Metzger, a former editor of Livestrong.com.

In a November, 2011 article, a former editor for Livestrong.com, Sarah Metzger said that dwindling daylight and colder days can drain your energy, zap your mood and spell trouble for your waistline.  We put her four ways to beat the blahs - winter recreation, seasonal produce, weights, and accountability - into a luxurious pick-you-up weekend.

You’ll enjoy a buffet breakfast before your two-hour guided snowshoe hike (snowshoes provided).  For lunch our chefs will use organic winter vegetables for a soup served with made-from-scratch bread and a healthy salad.

After time to relax, you’ll refresh with a visit to Spa Amira or Lillyjade, a salon. Each step of the way, you and your partner will be accountable for one another’s performance.

Come evening, you’ll be treated to a wonderful three-course meal at Nonna’sSample Menu.

Sunday will feature a continental breakfast at Cavanaugh’s, and a workout with weights and exercises under the supervision of a trainer at New Leaf Health & Fitness and a brunch at Nonna’s.  Sample Menu.  You’ll have a late check-out – 4pm – so your pace can be as relaxed as you want it to be.

All you have to do is relax, as you and your partner are accountable for your own enjoyment and for each other.

2011-2012 Winter Season Pass at The Homestead

The Homestead’s 2011-2012 winter season pass, called the ONE Pass, is a flexible new way to enjoy the cold weather months…even if you don’t ski or ride. The pass is so unique that it can be personalized to meet your specific desires for services such as haircuts, dinner, spa massage or fitness classes.

Use the ONE Pass for skiing or snowboarding, but if snow sports is not your style, consider pampering yourself with an Essential Facial and a Swedish Massage at Spa Amira. After an exhilarating day on the slopes you may be ready for a delicious three-course dinner at Nonna’s prepared by our Executive Chef John Piombo. Start your morning with a Zumba class at New Leaf Health & Fitness, followed by a haircut, manicure and pedicure at Lillyjade, our new salon. There are any number of combinations.

Little ones can enjoy special fun just for them at Camp Tamarack. Parents can escape by themselves to the slopes knowing their children are well cared for in a safe and stimulating environment.
