“Toast the Season is lots of fun, giving you a chance to experience the Leelanau wine trail, enjoy a great gift bag, taste some great wine and sample our food pairings,” explains Lucie Matthias of Chateau Fontaine. “It’s also a good time to get a start on your holiday shopping in our tasting rooms and at all the unique shops & stores in Leelanau’s villages. Deer hunting season starts on November 15th this year, and we see a lot of ‘deer widows’ too, who are looking for something fun to do while their husbands are away at deer camp!”

The tour features a special wine & food pairing at each of the 19 Leelanau Peninsula member wineries. At your starting winery you will be given a commemorative glass, an LPVA holiday ornament, a souvenir wine key and a holiday gift bag featuring local food including fair trade coffee from Higher Grounds Trading Company of Traverse City, cocoa-coated chocolate covered almonds from Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate in Empire, and (of course) Michigan cherries from Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor!

The Homestead is offering a special Toast the Season Lodging Package that includes wine tour tickets.

It is not often that a winemaker from Italy travels to Leelanau County to interact with dinner guests, but on September 26, 2011, Angela Maculan of Maculan Estate Winery was at The Homestead to do just that.

Guests experienced exemplary Italian wines from Maculan paired with gourmet food prepared by The Homestead’s Executive Chef John Piombo of Nonna’s. The winemaker chose five distinct wines to serve at each of the five dinner courses including:

Costadolio Rosato, a full and soft Rose wine made with 100% Merlot grapes

Brentino, a dry and full-bodied red wine made with 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes

Palazzotto Cabernet Sauvignon, a full and dry ruby red wine made with 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes

Pino & Toi, an intense and fruity white wine made with 35% Pinot Bianco, 15% Pinot Grigio and 60% Tai

Dindarello, a sweet and fresh, full and balanced wine made with 100% Muscatgrapes

Each February, when the air is briskly cold and snow covers the ground, visitors and Leelanau residents venture out of their toasty-warm homes for a sampling of food, local wine and fine art from Michigan’s wine coast. The exhibit is sponsored by the Glen Arbor Art Association and is always held on a Friday evening. It serves as the “kick off” event of the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner’s Association’sTaste the Passion” wine trail event that takes place on that Saturday and Sunday.

The festivities are held at The Homestead in the grand-but-cozy Mountain Flowers Lodge. This year guests were lined up at the door well before the event’s opening. Once inside the event got off to an immediate and lively start. Fires crackled in both indoor and outdoor fireplaces, while corks popped as guests filled their glasses with fine wines produced from local Leelanau wineries. Guests mingled with each other as they viewed colorful pieces of art, sipped wine and noshed on small plates prepared by Nonna’s Executive Chef, John Piombo.

Nine local artists, all members of the Glen Arbor Art Association, proudly displayed their artwork, showcasing the Leelanau landscapes. Art was available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds going directly to the Glen Arbor Art Association children’s programs.

The Glen Arbor Art Association Event Chair said, ” The ambience of Mountain Flowers Lodge, and great staff, food and wine were a perfect combination for a most successful evening that was enjoyed by all!  The artists felt honored to be included and our overflow crowd (doubled 2010 attendance!) had a grand time.”

The Glen Arbor Art Association  is a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 by local artists and supporters who had a desire “to see the work of area artists celebrated and promoted for all to enjoy, by teaching classes, organizing exhibits and holding events that promote understand and appreciation for the arts.”  They sponsor the monthly “Talk About Art” series and the popular “Manitou Music Festival“.
