Conventional wisdom says change comes slowly. It didn’t at Camp Firefly. The work on the recently announced expansion designed to accommodate up to 100 wedding guests wasn’t a day old when a change, a major change, was made.

While working together, the builders and the wedding sales team saw an opportunity to use a new, altogether different design to create a stunningly beautiful ceremony site. Almost immediately, plans for the screen porch and a deck cantilevered over a pond were scrapped.

In their place is a plan for a porch that flows seamlessly down wide stone steps to a two-tier pond side ceremony site surrounded by wildflower gardens. The ceremony site will be visible from a guest seating area on the opposite side of the pond.

“We wanted to create a very romantic, very natural setting with unmatched visibility for all. This does it,” said Barb Ellis of the sales team.

“Get outside!” is the first tip Wilson offered. “In Michigan fair-skinned people should get five to eight minutes of sun exposure without SPF. People with darker complexions can get 10 to 15 minutes of exposure.”

Recommended exposures are two to three times per week. Vitamin D helps everything in our bodies including our skin.

We consider ourselves very fortunate to live and work at a resort surrounded by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, the place the viewers of ABC’s Good Morning America recently chose as the “Most Beautiful Place In America.” We also consider ourselves to be good stewards and good neighbors as we treasure the lakeshore just as much as anyone.

As part of our stewardship we operate a Wastewater Recycling and Reuse System that is considered state of the art. It treats and disinfects wastewater, irrigates the treated water on agricultural crops, relies on natural processes for nutrient uptake, and recharges the aquifer. Regular tests are taken and results are reported to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. They routinely show that the system meets or exceeds all applicable standards for effluent quality.

A former employee of the National Park Service has repeatedly criticized The Homestead for one reason or another. Initially his criticism of the recycling and reuse system was that aerosol drifts would sometimes go onto property owned by the Lakeshore. While we believe that drifts were infrequent and had little impact, we took steps to eliminate them. The steps we took were reviewed and approved by the NPS and the MDEQ. Now the former employee’s criticism is that the system harms wildlife. We believe that does not warrant a response – the system grows agricultural crops just as the farms, orchards, and vineyards in our area do.

We ask that you read a recent release and the water quality standards it includes to assure yourself that these statements – repeated or not – are wrong.

Press Release:

Like others, we treasure the Lakeshore

For Release: December 7, 2011

The author of a December 6, 2011 Forum entitled “Wayward sewage at Sleeping Bear Dunes” (Traverse City, Record Eagle) made several allegations regarding the operation and effectiveness of The Homestead’s wastewater treatment facility. He has made those allegations a number of times in a number of places. They have been corrected with factually accurate information and investigated by the National Park Service (NPS) and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and found to be without merit.

“We are disappointed to again read these statements. Like others, we treasure the Lakeshore and the area in which we live and work and take day-to-day steps to be good stewards. This practice includes treating wastewater in strict accord with the law,” said Adriene Kokowicz Vice President and General Manager of the resort.

She further said: “To let all of our neighbors know the facts, I asked our engineers to read the Forum, again review the compliance reports we file with the MDNR and provide a statement for public release regarding the nature of our system and the quality of the effluent it produces. It follows.”

The wastewater system at The Homestead was reviewed and approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The approval was in strict accord with the law and did not rest on a “loophole.”

The treated, sanitized effluent that is discharged by the wastewater system meets or exceeds all environmental standards set by the MDEQ. These standards are the same for all wastewater treatment facilities throughout Michigan.

These standards include a disinfection standard that meets Rules 62(2) and 62(3) of the Part 4 Water Quality Standards for partial body contact (meaning water skiing, canoeing and wading), as required by the permit. Typically, the treated, sanitized effluent from The Homestead’s wastewater system exceeds this standard and actually meets the standard for total body contact (meaning swimming). Any time the treated effluent did not meet those standards The Homestead acted promptly and in full cooperation with the governmental agencies to make any corrections that needed to be made.

The treated, sanitized wastewater is discharged on an easement owned by The Homestead. At the request of the NPS and MDEQ, the easement was fenced. In most cases, the fencing is located inside the resort’s easement to provide an additional buffer for the public. The warning signs around it were installed in response to a NPS request and a MDEQ requirement just as they are at all other discharge areas in the State.

The Homestead’s wastewater treatment system employs an environmentally responsible and sustainable process. It recycles wastewater for irrigating agricultural crops, relies on natural processes for nutrient uptake and recharges the aquifer. Systems of this type are in operation throughout the State of Michigan. They are routinely used in the western US and are considered state of the art where groundwater sources are not as plentiful as in Michigan.

In an earlier response to these allegations, the National Park Service brought an expert from Ft. Collins, Colorado to inspect the system. He found no fault with it. An expert from the MDNRE also inspected the system. She found no fault with it.

Doug Coates, P.E. – Gosling Czubak Engineering Sciences, Inc

December 7, 2011

The facts that the system produces effluent that meets all of the state’s standards and that it has again been inspected by the National Park Service and the MDEQ, should correct any misimpressions created by the Forum. So should the common sense notion that water which is routinely tested and found to meet the State’s standards for safe wading and water skiing is unlikely to be a human health hazard as a result of occasional aerosol drifts.

-END-

______________________________________________________________

For convenience, the rule to which the engineers referred and two definitions appear below.

Rule

R 323.1062 Microorganisms.

Rule 62. (1) All surface waters of the state protected for total body contact recreation shall not contain more than 130 Escherichia coli (E. coli) per 100 milliliters, as a 30-day geometric mean. Compliance shall be based on the geometric mean of all individual samples taken during 5 or more sampling events representatively spread over a 30-day period. Each sampling event shall consist of 3 or more samples taken at representative locations within a defined sampling area. At no time shall the surface waters of the state protected for total body contact recreation contain more than a maximum of 300 E. coli per 100 milliliters. Compliance shall be based on the geometric mean of 3 or more samples taken during the same sampling event at representative locations within a defined sampling area.

(2) All surface waters of the state protected for partial body contact recreation shall not contain more than a maximum of 1,000 E. coli per 100 milliliters. Compliance shall be based on the geometric mean of 3 or more samples, taken during the same sampling event, at representative locations within a defined sampling area.

(3) Discharges containing treated or untreated human sewage shall not contain more than 200 fecal coliform bacteria per 100 milliliters, based on the geometric mean of all of 5 or more samples taken over a 30-day period, nor more than 400 fecal coliform bacteria per 100 milliliters, based on the geometric mean of all of 3 or more samples taken during any period of discharge not to exceed 7 days. Other indicators of adequate disinfection may be utilized where approved by the department.

(4) The department may suspend the provisions of subrule (3) of this rule, for the purpose of discharge permit issuance, from November 1 to April 30, upon an adequate demonstration by the applicant that designated uses will be protected. At a minimum, the provisions of subrule (2) of this rule shall be met.

(5) Acceptable levels of infectious organisms that are not specifically addressed by the provisions of subrules (1), (2), and (3) of this rule shall be established by the department on a case-by-case basis to assure that designated uses are protected.

Definitions of Designated Uses

Partial Body Contact Water quality standards are maintained for water skiing, canoeing, and wading

Total Body Contact Water quality standards are maintained for swimming

About Chef John Piombo

Born in the Bronx, Chef John Piombo’s parents returned to Italy when he was four and it was here that his love for all that is food grew immensely. After graduating from L’alberghiera Maria Mazzini in Genoa, Italy, Piombo spent years sharpening his skills in local restaurants. His travels took him to France, England, Germany and Spain, where he was exposed to different cultures, cuisines and cooking styles.

It was the late 1980s when Piombo returned to the United States, working at Tiberio’s (Washington DC-Bal Harbour), Stringfellow’s (London, England and Coconut Grove, Florida) and Letizia’s (New York). Wishing to broaden his culinary skills, Piombo moved west to the San Francisco Bay Area in March 2000, where he accepted a sous chef position with the California Cafe’ in Walnut Creek. Here, he was exposed to Asian and Southwest influences, which he felt were missing from his repertoire. He was soon promoted to Executive Chef and continued to master his skills, observing all the talented chefs create culinary masterpieces with all the different ingredients that were available to them.

An opportunity to be closer to his family prompted Chef Piombo to accept a transfer to Orlando. From there, he made the move to Northwest Michigan and The Homestead. He dedicated three years (2004-2007) to building up the resort’s reputation as a dining destination, catering to owners, guests and locals. He took a brief hiatus, but was back at The Homestead by the summer of 2008, helping shape the world-class, locally-infused menu.

December 20, 2011

As the Christmas Holiday approaches most Midwest winter enthusiasts plan to spend time carving turns on the snow covered hills of Northern Michigan. However, an unseasonably mild fall left many of those black diamonds more green than white. In fact, less than 2 inches of natural snowfall has been reported in Leelanau County to date with very little snow in the long term forecast.

Fortunately, The Homestead has state-of-the-art snowmaking capabilities and a crew of snow makers who have been and continue to make snow whenever temperatures permit.

Two weeks ago our crew logged over 100 hours of continuous snow making which blanketed some of our marquee trails at Bay Mountain. After a week of mild temperatures, the crew was able to start up the snow machines at 5 am Tuesday morning (December 20, 2011) and have been making snow ever since. Snow making will continue as the temperatures permit with the goal of opening as much terrain as possible on December 26th.

Snow Making on Purple Clover - 12/20/11 (Photo by Ileana Habsburg-Snyder)

The early indications for skiing and riding during the holidays will be man-made, machine groomed. The available terrain for skiing and riding will be limited. At this time, we anticipate having one chair lift and one surface lift (Magic Carpet) open on December 26th and 2-3 trails with the hope of opening more skiable terrain as the holiday week progresses.

For up-to-date information on snow and trail conditions visit our website Snow Report web page.

We have an exciting array of winter lodging packages for the not only the outdoor enthusiast who likes to ski or ride, but also for those who need a relaxing getaway. Enjoy lodging packages that include dining, spa massage, salon services and more. Special Resort Offers webpage for a complete list.

The headline’s right. We’re making skiing and riding family friendly again. There are only three restrictions and there’s no fine print. The restrictions are:

– The kids and their family must be registered guests at The Homestead.
– At least one parent must have purchased a same day, all day lift ticket.
– Proof of relationship must be presented.

This offer is available every day of the season, including holidays, as there are no black out dates. So that’s it.

This is one of two offerings in America (the other one is at Mt. Bachelor in Oregon, a long drive for a weekend) that’s as family friendly as this offer is. Think about it: your savings could cover most meals and gas. We’d love to hear your thoughts. Post a comment.

The thought behind them is that we’d like to offer an engaging, easy-to-navigate site that lets you find what you want when you want it.

Its important to note that the new site, like the old, will have a lot of ingredients. We’re spicing them up with graphics, videos, a better-organized navigation bar, a search function, easier-to-use booking engine and fabulous photography.

We hope your experience will be enhanced by the presentation much like it is on the plates at Nonna’s or one of our local favorites, Martha’s Leelanau Table.

John Piombo, the Chef who brought his culinary magic to Nonna’s, is about to open his cooking school. The schools will be held using new facilities in the rustic farmhouse setting found at Nonna’s Loft.

The focus will be as it is in his kitchen – on classic Italian techniques with an emphasis of fresh, local and sustainable.
By summer, the school will include a from the farm culinary experience. Some products will be raised at The Homestead, some at Community Supported Agriculture farms in the community. “Today, people are interested in knowing not only where there food comes from but also how to prepare it from scratch for better taste and health for their families” said Piombo.

Piombo and his team will limit class sizes but will customize them for groups, parties, girlfriends’ getaways and the like.

Winter Classes 2012

Here we grow again! Camp Firefly’s Great Hall will be doubled, a two sided bar will be built, and a kitchen will be installed. A new screen porch will feature a fireplace alcove and expansive views of the pond and valley below and ridge beyond.

The work is being done to respond to scores of requests for a wedding venue that will accommodate 50-100 guests.

“Our wedding venue at Café Manitou is perfect for the smaller wedding much as our venue at Mountain Flowers Lodge is perfect for the larger wedding. We will now be able to offer an equally attractive facility to couples planning a mid-size wedding,” said Bob Kuras, President of the resort.

Tom Phillips, a Colorado architect, is designing the expansion. Phillips will be working with Jerry Pearson a California landscape architect, Bob White, a Michigan lighting designer, Gary Nealis, Michigan electrical engineer and Dave Chryst, a Michigan structural engineer. The resort’s management will do the interior design.

Construction is scheduled to start yet this year and is to be completed by late April. For more information, contact Barb Ellis or Emily Anderson in Group Sales at 231.334.5300.

In May, Dr. Beach, the renowned beach scientist who only rates ocean beaches, came to the Great Lakes for the first time. In his beach evaluation, Sleeping Bear Dunes was received the highest rating as the ”Five Great, Great Lakes Beaches.”

In July, American Chef and Food Network star, Mario Batali raised awareness of the region when two blog articles published by Bon Appétit, “How Mario Batali Gets His Drink On In and Around Traverse City, Michigan,” and “How Mario Batali Escapes New York Summers.” The Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitors Bureau picked up on Batali’s whereabouts this summer as he tweeted his location every few hours in the blog, “Mario’s Passion for Leelanau.” ABC’s Good Morning America also produced a video segment, “Mario Batali on the Wonders of Sleeping Bear.”

The big news came on August 8, 2011 when Good Morning America announced that Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was on of “GMA’s 10 Most Beautiful Places in America.” On August 9, 2011 ABC viewers were introduced to Sleeping Bear Dunes as one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Places on Good Morning America show. Voting took place during that week with the winner being announced on August 17, 2011. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was revealed on national television as the “Most Beautiful Place in America.”

It didn’t take long for Yahoo! Travel to get in on the excitement of Sleeping Bear Dunes with their “Top Five Non-Ocean Beach Destinations” awards. This time Sleeping Bear Dunes did not receive the number one spot, but it did get number two.

Did all the notoriety make a difference in the number of visitor to the National Park? In early October, the National Lakeshore reported that September 2011 visitor numbers were “stellar,” making it the second busiest September on record. October numbers were even better, breaking all past records for that month. Park officials suspect that the high number of visitors was partially due to a long, warm autumn with outstanding fall foliage color. At this time, November 2011 park visitor numbers have not been reported. Even with the spike in visitors this fall, park officials do not expect 2011 to break the record that was set in 2006 for the most park visitors.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitors Bureau reported that the number of website visitors was fairly similar in 2011 to 2010 number, until June when the number of website visitors increased substantially. The big spike came in August with the “Most Beautiful Place in America” announcement, but fall numbers remained significantly higher all the way through November. Early December numbers are showing the same trend.

The exceptional natural setting of The Homestead Resort in Leelanau County makes it a perfect venue for romantic getaways, family vacations, family reunions, and weddings. Weddings at the Resort’s Café Manitou take place in an intimate terraced amphitheatre with the sky, bay, dunes, and islands as a backdrop. Indeed, wedding participants are surrounded by beauty in every direction. Guests are seated in a semi-circle around the couple and can experience the ceremony up close.

This was the scene when David and Elizabeth exchanged vows on a beautiful September afternoon in a ceremony that had been several years in the making.

The couple met in early 1993 right after college in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. They were both transplants for the midwest and worked and lived briefly enjoying a season of sking. Subsequently, they dated a bit in Denver, then went their separate ways for graduate school. But in 2009, fate, otherwise known as Facebook, intervened when Elizabeth found David’s profile. They reconnected and began to correspond and then to arrange visits. This was not the easiest thing to accomplish: both are busy professionals—the bride travels extensively as the CEO of her own non-profit organization, and the groom is a busy project manager.

Wedding Ceremoney at Cafe Manitou (photo by Purcell Photography)

But they worked out the logistics and coordinated schedules, and as they say . . . the rest is history! On one of the most beautiful summer days of the year, with a slight breeze and temperatures near 80 degrees, David and Elizabeth joined hands at The Homestead, on the patio bluff overlooking Lake Michigan.

David grew up in Michigan and has family in Northern Michigan. The couple loved to vacation in the area and were drawn back for their wedding ceremony. The Homestead Resort offers exactly what they wanted: a wedding in a gorgeous setting with breathtaking scenery. The view from the Café Manitou’s terrace is unmatched. Nestled above the beach, just a stone’s throw from the shore, with beautiful vistas. The couple also stated that the Resort’s staff was great and provided a stress free day.

The ceremony was an intimate affair, with the couples’ closest friends and family in attendance. David’s daughter, Sophia, made a charming flower girl. During the ceremony, Elizabeth presented Sophia with a special heart-shaped necklace to symbolize that a whole new family was being created that day.

David & Elizabeth on The Homestead Beach (photo by Purcell Photography)

After enjoying a memorable dinner at the Café Manitou, the couple and their guests were treated to a breathtaking sunset over Lake Michigan. What a perfect culmination to an extraordinary day and the beginning of a new life together!

The resulting fashion collection includes the colors of sandstone, seashell, and various shades of grey that represent the beach and sand dunes. Deep blues and dark navy are characteristic of the deep waters of Lake Michigan. Splashes of “safety orange” are typical of the colors used by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Coast Guard. Dark, rich shades of grey represent the colors of the freighters that travel through the waterways of Sleeping Bear Dunes. It is also not surprising to also see nautical stripes, double-breasted jackets and boat shoes that are typical of a “sailor look”.

With the Thanksgiving holiday on the horizon, it won’t be long until Northern Michigan ski resorts begin making snow in anticipation of a turkey day opening. Weather experts are predicting a “Snowmagedon” this winter with long-range forecasts calling for cold temperatures and above average snowfall. That is great news for snow sports enthusiasts. The Homestead, located in the middle of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, is a perfect place for the first family ski vacation. Stunning views of Lake Michigan, the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Manitou Islands are what draw skiers and boarders to Bay Mountain. The terrain is ideal for beginners and intermediates and the un-crowded slopes give ample time to practice new skills.

The Homestead partners with the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA) each year to offer affordable ways to get children and their families out on the slopes. One such program is the “Cold Is Cool!” promotion aimed at Michigan 4th grade students. This program allows any 4th grade student from a Michigan school to ski or ride for free. The goal of the program is to promote skiing and riding, having fun, being safe and staying healthy. Each November a packet and application is mailed to 4th grade principals outlining the benefits of the Cold Is Cool promotion. Once parents enroll their 4th grade student in the program, they are mailed a passport book which contains a coupon for a complimentary lift ticket at nearly 30 Michigan ski resorts. The only stipulation is that the 4th grader be accompanied by a paying adult. Fourth grade is the perfect time to learn to ski or ride, nine and ten year olds have the coordination to pick up the sport quickly.

Another great MSIA promotion is “Discover Michigan Skiing” which offers affordable skiing and instruction during the month of January. Discover Michigan Skiing is part of the national “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month” campaign which is designed to provide and affordable way for people to ski or snowboard. For example, The Homestead offers a two-hour group lesson, day lift ticket and rental for just $30. The lesson component covers basic fundamentals for turning, stopping, riding the lifts and getting up from a fall.

For those who like to ski or board at different resorts and ski areas all winter long, don’t miss the Michigan White Gold Card. Skiers have the option of skiing one time at each participating ski resort for the 2011-2012 season for one low price ($189, same price as last year).

The Winter Trails Day is a nation wide event every January. The program is designed to give children and adults new to snow sports the chance to try cross country skiing and snowshoeing for free. The Homestead offers a two-hour lesson for each sport and then the group travels into Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park on the Bay View Trail that adjoins The Homestead property. The program includes a national park pass and instruction. Winter Trails Day is January 7, 2012.

Don’t miss out on incredible deals at The Homestead with a season pass that can be used for skiing, snowboarding, lessons, massage, salon services, dining, fitness classes and childcare.
Imagine travelling the entire length of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore without stepping into your car. This will be a reality with the development of a 27-mile paved trail running from the northern end of the National Lakeshore to just south of Empire. The proposed Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will give walkers, runners, wheelchair users, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, baby strollers, and rollerbladers a safe and enjoyable way to explore the Lakeshore and neighboring communities.

On August 12th, the first phase of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail was launched with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Dune Climb. More than 200 trail supporters attended and speakers included Senator Carl Levin; the Superintendent of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Dusty Schultz; NPS Midwest Region Deputy Regional Director, Patty Trap; the Chair of the Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route Committee, Tom Nixon; and SBHT Campaign Cabinet Member, Bob Sutherland.

The first 5-mile stretch, to be complete by July of 2012, will begin at the base of the Dune Climb and continue north to Glen Arbor. The trail will wander through forest area and is mostly flat with a few gentle undulations. The entire stretch will be paved for ease of use. The trail will connect some of the primary visitor attractions in the National Lakeshore, including the Dune Climb and DH Day Campground, and the community of Glen Arbor. Leave the car behind and use the trail to get around the Lakeshore or into Glen Arbor for shopping and dining.

Mark & Bob -
I just wanted to thank you both for a truly eye-opening weekend! I am so glad I found your tour on The Homestead’s website - it was a great adventure!

I was apprehensive about taking this tour alone, but you both were so friendly, knowledgeable and approachable – you made the tour informative, and a lot of fun! The group of people on this tour was so inviting and I really enjoyed meeting everyone! With Mark’s eye for what makes an incredible photo and Bob’s technical knowledge, you’ve really got the best of everything for these tours! Even in the inclement weather, the photo shoot stops had such gorgeous scenery and views. I especially loved the covered bridge and the Day barns stops!

I’m attaching a few of my favorite photos from the tour. Thanks again for making this weekend so fun and such a great learning experience!

Hi Mark & Bob,

I had an absolutely amazing time on the photo tour! I want you both to know how comfortable you made me feel in spite of my lack of knowledge about my camera and photography in general! I love that you are both so laid back and easy going – you both made it so easy for me, and everyone else as well, to ask questions about anything! When I got home and had a chance to go through my photos, I was so surprised at the images I had created! They look like real professional photographs! The best part of the whole weekend is that I had FUN! I can honestly say it was the first time in my life that I felt really passionate about something so thank you!

Official Press Release from Leelanau Peninsula Vintner’s Association

(LEELANAU PENINSULA, Michigan) – In what has become a Northwest Michigan holiday tradition, the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association will hold the 2011 Toast the Season wine tour. Once again, two consecutive weekends of tasting and touring will be offered, November 5 & 6 or November 12 & 13. The self-guided tour includes a gift bag featuring local food items, and you may visit up to 8 wineries each day in any order you choose between the hours of 11am to 5pm Saturday, or noon to 5pm Sunday.

“Toast the Season is lots of fun, giving you a chance to experience the Leelanau wine trail, enjoy a great gift bag, taste some great wine and sample our food pairings,” explains Lucie Matthias of Chateau Fontaine. “It’s also a good time to get a start on your holiday shopping in our tasting rooms and at all the unique shops & stores in Leelanau’s villages. Deer hunting season starts on November 15th this year, and we see a lot of ‘deer widows’ too, who are looking for something fun to do while their husbands are away at deer camp!”

The tour features a special wine & food pairing at each of the 19 Leelanau Peninsula member wineries. At your starting winery you will be given a commemorative glass, an LPVA holiday ornament, a souvenir wine key and a holiday gift bag featuring local food including fair trade coffee from Higher Grounds Trading Company of Traverse City, cocoa-coated chocolate covered almonds from Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate in Empire, and (of course) Michigan cherries from Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor!

The Homestead is offering a special Toast the Season Lodging Package that includes wine tour tickets.

Food Pairings

Below are a few of the tantalizing wine & food pairings!

Chateau de Leelanau will be serving the “World Famous Willies Chili” with Solem Farm Red.

L.Mawby will offer Nature’s Treat dried apples slices with Black Diamond aged white cheddar, paired with the L. Mawby Consort.

Ciccone Vinyards will feature an Italian Bruschetta with fresh ingredients straight from the garden paired with their 2009 Cabernet Franc.

Official Press Release from the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association

Tune up the skis and snowboards and get out the long johns, because Michigan will see a cold and snowy winter, according to national meteorologists and two competing farmer’s almanacs.

National meteorologists agree that Michigan is in a “La Nina” weather pattern, which traditionally means more snow and colder temperatures. “I think this winter is going to be an exceptional one,” said AccuWeather forecaster Paul Pastelok. He predicts that Michigan’s southwest corner, and up to Traverse City, should prepare for early season snows, fueled by cold northwest winds crossing warm Lake Michigan waters.

AccuWeather Winter 2012 Prediction (Oct. 11, 2011)

Meteorologist Heather Buchman of AccuWeather.com predicts that snowfall will be, “above normal from Minnesota and Iowa into Michigan, Ohio and parts of West Virginia and Kentucky. This buildup of snow cover across the Midwest and Great Lakes could act to prolong the colder-than-normal weather beyond February and into early spring.”

Mickey MacWilliams, executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries Association, says that’s great news for skiers and snowboarders. She points out, however, that even if Mother Nature doesn’t provide the perfect base of snow, Michigan’s ski areas are prepared to make it. “Each year our ski areas add more and better snowmaking equipment, to insure that when temperatures are 28º or lower, there will be snow on the slopes,” she adds. More information about Michigan’s ski slopes and trails is available at goskimichigan.com.

That may not be necessary, according to the AccuWeather prediction map for the Great Lakes area, which shows “Heavy Lake Effect Snows” for most of the Upper Peninsula and the western half of the Lower Peninsula. Buchman explains that, “Bitterly cold blasts of arctic air are expected to invade the northern Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes, December through January, while snowfall averages above normal.” In relation to the snow, Pastelok said, “A couple of heavy hitters are possible [during this time].”

Two publications in the “predictions” business agree. According to the time-honored, complex calculations of the 220-year-old The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Lower Lakes region, which includes all of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula except for the northern region from Muskegon east to Alpena will experience the snowiest periods in mid-December, mid- and late January, mid-February, and mid-March. For the Upper Peninsula and the northern region of the Lower Peninsula, The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts, “winter will be colder than normal, especially in February. Other cold periods will occur in mid- and late December and mid- and late January.”

The Farmers’ Almanac, a competitor to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, places Michigan’s Lower Peninsula in the “Very White” section of their winter prediction map, while the Upper Peninsula will experience “Very Cold, Average Snowfall.” Both books use secret formulas to predict weather based on sunspots, planetary positions and other information and feature a mix of helpful hints, recipes, gardening tips, jokes and inspirational messages.

Pure Michigan, the award-winning advertising campaign known for its romantic radio and TV ads narrated by Michigan’s Tim Allen, and the Michigan Apple Committee (MAC) are working together to promote the state’s largest fruit crop – apples. The Homestead is participating in the Pure Michigan Apples promotion by providing a basket of fresh, juicy locally-grown apples at the front desk at The Reception Center throughout the month of October. The apples will be provided by local farms in Leelanau and nearby counties.

Listen to Tim Allen narrate the Pure Michigan Apple radio spot.

Guests of The Homestead can also pick up a 2011 Directory from the Michigan Farm Marketing & Agricultural Tourism Association at no charge. The directory provides a wealth of information about local farm markets divided into regions. Apple orchards, pumpkin patches, dairy farms, produce farms, vineyards, wineries, cider mills, bakeries and even corn mazes are listed.

“Buying local” has become a theme across the nation and its meaning is big in Michigan where farming is still a mainstay of the economy. Residents and tourists want to purchase locally-grown food whenever possible. In the fall when apples are abundant, who can resist the crunch and sweet taste of a Michigan apple?

The well-known Pure Michigan campaign has been recognized by many organizations and most notably as being in the top 10 all-time best travel campaigns, named the #1 social media campaign and received several awards for the best state tourism television, radio and welcome center commercials.

Readers voted for their favorite businesses by county.
The “Best Michigander” category was pretty funny and worth a read. Almost 70 entries were submitted to finish the statement, ”You Know You’re From Northern Michigan When…” Here is a sampling:

The “Next Big Thing” category was also worth a glance. Readers submitted what they thought would be trending in the near future. “Going green” was the most mentioned next big thing along with going organic, no smoking, and non-plastic bottles.
Michiganders and Midwesterners probably are not familiar with Dr. Beach, but those who reside near the oceans know him well. Dr. Stephen Leatherman has built a name for himself as “the” expert on beach quality. Each year since 1991 he rates America’s Best Ocean Beaches on Memorial Day under the name, Dr. Beach. He is a scientist and director of the Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research. For over 21 years he has researched and rated the nation’s beaches and gives ten of them the honor of making his Top 10 Best Beaches.

In all his years as a beach scientist, he has only focused on ocean beaches and never on the Great Lakes. Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio and Canadian residents wrote him thousands of letters and emails over the years asking him to come to the Great Lakes to experience freshwater beaches. This year, for his first time ever, Dr. Beach visited Great Lakes beaches.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman AKA Dr. Beach

Over 30 Great Lakes locations were nominted. Each coastal community completed a survey and sent in sand samples. The survey contained 50 questions on cleanliness, safety, water quality and sand quality. Dr. Beach made his evaluation and named Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore his #1 beach in the Great Lakes. Here are his Top 5 Best Beaches in the Great Lakes:

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan (Lake Michigan)

2. Presque Isle Start Park in Pennsylvania (Lake Erie)

3. Sand Point Beach in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan (Lake Superior)

4. Bayfield Main Beach in Ontario, Canada (Lake Huron)

5. Oak Street Beach in Illinois (Lake Michigan)

Dr. Beach was smitten with the Great Lakes. He commented, “The Great Lakes are a hidden gem because people have almost no knowledge of them.” He also noted that beach goers do not have to worry about shark attacks or jellyfish stings like they do in the ocean. During his Lake Michigan tour, he experienced Sleeping Bear Dune’s majestic dunes and hiking trails as well as the beaches. He was impressed.

Read Dr. Beach’s beach reviews along with two additional honorable mention beaches in the article ”5 Great, Great Lakes Beaches.” We were excited to see a picture of our own Cafe Manitou in one of his featured pictures.

Yahoo! Travel decided to evaluate a few beach destinations across the United States, but there are no ocean beaches in the mix. Sleeping Bear Dunes earned the number two spot on the list. The other beach contenders are quite different from the large, northern freshwater body where Sleeping Bear Dunes is located. The other Top 4 are located in the west with one located in Canada. One winner is not actually a beach; it is a colossal indoor pool. Here are the winners:

#5: Lake Powell is located in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Utah with over 186 miles of sandy beach and it is surrounded by red canyon rock cliff.

Lake Powell, Utah

#4. Lake Travis is an 18-acre lake located near Austin, Texas with 270 miles of shoreline.

Lake Travis, Texas

#3. World Waterpark is the world’s largest indoor water park located in the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada. The pool is five acres and is enclosed for year-round fun.

#1. Lake Havasu is a sprawling lake with 60 miles of waterways. It is located in Arizona.

Watch the Yahoo! Travel video announcing the Top 5. We are curious about what you think after watching this…”watery fun” news story.

But…Our beloved Sleeping Bear Dunes, although named #2, will always be #1 to us!

The Homestead is located in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes country. The National Park resides to the north and south of The Homestead with the Crystal River flowing through both the resort and the National Park. Both have miles of shoreline on beautiful Lake Michigan with views of the Manitou Islands.

By Mark S. Carlson of Great Lakes Photo Tours

With these cool nights of September come the first hints of fall in Michigan’s ‘Little Finger’ Peninsula. One-time green leaves are now yellowing and the clarity of the scenery becomes more apparent with each distant view. Another season of beauty is rapidly approaching in the area known as the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Great Lakes Photo Tours will be there, ready to capture those colorful scenic and intimate landscapes during their Autumn Dunes Eco/Photo Tour Weekend, October 14th – 16th at The Homestead in Glen Arbor, Michigan.

Participants will be treated to some of the most charming pastoral and natural scenery the region has to offer. From Point-and-Shoot’s to advanced SLR’s, everyone will learn more about their own camera and the environment around them. Covering all the basics, along with the knowledge of how to make great photos with a keener sense for good subject matter, natural light, and artful compositions, Great Lakes Photo Tours offers a wealth of information to improve your own photography.
